Star Wars: The Phantom Menace 3D Review

The Phantom Menace has aged well.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace returned to the big screen for the first time in 3D and earned $22.5 million domestically and $20.5 Million across the globe bring it's total gross to $968 million.

The Phantom Menace, the first in the series of Star Wars prequels, is the first to receive the 3D treatment. The 3D adds depths to the mostly digital worlds and is most noticeable when an object appears in the foreground. The up-conversion of this film is much better than recent up-conversions such as The Clash of the Titans.

Since it's release in 1999, many criticisms of The Phantom Menace and of George Lucas have made their rounds on the internet and have seemed to sour many people's opinion of this film. The anticipation and hype that revolved around the film before it was released has not been matched since, and perhaps the high expectations were the beginning of all the complaints.

The complainers seem to forget that these movies are aimed towards children and that kids today still laugh at Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best) and his antics. They also seem to forget that this film includes two of the best action sequences in the franchise. The much maligned Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) races in and wins the Boonta Eve Podrace. The ending sequence, with four simultaneous battles, is very similar to the ending of the much loved Return of the Jedi. Jar Jar leads the Gungans against the Battle Driod army which allows the Naboo to make their assault on the Trade Federation. As the Naboo pilots take off to destroy the Trade Federation control ship in a space battle, Qui-Gon (Liam Neeson) and Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) square off in an epic lightsaber battle against Darth Maul (Ray Park). All the while, the Queen (Natalie Portman) and her decoy (Keira Knightley) lead two separate groups attempting to get to the throne room to capture the Vice Roy.

In addition to the action, the now teenage film's special effects hold up very well. Considering that the majority of the film's droids, sets, ships, worlds and a few of it's characters are CGI it still looks great even by 2012's standards. Unlike previous re-releases, the only addition to the film was the added depth from the 3D conversion, the film remains unchanged from the recent Blu-ray release. The higher quality transfer and the 3D also enables viewers to see things that may have gone unnoticed previously. The Wookies, the E.T.s and other aliens in the Republic Senate are much more noticeable for instance and many of the actions in the background are clearer as well.

Star Wars is now playing on a big screen near you. If you are a Star Wars fan, supporting this movie will ensure that the other Star Wars films will also make it to a theater near you. May the force be with you.

Woman in Black Review

Daniel Radcliffe faces the forces of evil once again.

The Woman in Black offers period piece scares in an old haunted house cut off from the rest of the world.

Director, James Watkins, brings Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter from the Harry Potter movies) back to the silver screen as a widowed lawyer, Arthur Kipp, trying to keep his job by settling the massive amounts of legal documents of the Drablow estate. Mrs. Drablow is a recently deceased eccentric woman and the paper work is located in her isolated and decrepited country home. The years since the loss of his wife have been hard on him personally and professional, and Kipp has to leave his four year old son with his nanny in London for this assignment.

When Kipp arrives in the small village, the locals do not want him there. Parents go as far to push their children inside their homes as he walks or rides down the streets. They begrudgingly offer him the attic at the inn for a night and try to make him go back to London the following morning. He has to bribe a carriage driver to take him to the isolated home, Eel Marsh House, surrounded by marsh and cut off from the mainland when the tide rolls in. Kipp soon learns of the deadly secrets being kept in the home and in the small village.

Once Kipp arrives the Drablow home, he dutiful begins his work, but is soon interrupted by shadows and strange noises. He witnesses many strange things over the course of a few days going to the house and each time he sees the ghostly figure it seems a child dies in a mysterious way back in the village.

The filmmaker creates a dreadfully dark setting with music and sound effects to match and offers many jump scares to startle the audience. Several sequences of the movie reflect more modern horror, but the time period and the use of candle light builds tension in the dark house on dark nights.

This movie is not for kids, due the scares of haunted house story with a few twists. It is not a prefect scary movie, but it does create a creepy story of a vengeful spirit in the isolated location and builds a mythos around the history of the location and the spirit.

Daniel Radcliffe does showcase his acting skills in the movie, and the film deserves a soild "B" rating for the frightening atmosphere, character development, and story telling, but the pacing is slow in a few places and the ending was not all that it could have been.

"The Muppets" Is Great and a New TV Show Is in the Works

I loved the new Muppet movie. I had more fun at this movie than any movie I can remember. I laughed and laughed through out the film, which is unusual. The classic Muppet songs along with the new ones were great. My wife and I were listening to the soundtrack as we traveled for Thanksgiving. It was fun seeing the old gang back together again, and even though the plot has been done before, it was still heart warming and as i mentioned earlier a lot of fun. This is a must see for any of us who grew up with the Muppets and anyone who has young kids.

"The Muppets" may make $40 million this weekend, which is especially good since the budget for the film was only $45 million. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/box-office-twilight-muppets-thanksgiving-266044

In other Muppet news, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that, "The network is developing The New Nabors, a single-camera comedy project that centers on a family that lives in Palm Springs and is aghast with their new neighbors -- a gang of puppets." I would still prefer a revival of the actually "Muppet Show" with the guest stars and skits, but Muppets on TV would be cool however it happens. With Comic-Con going on right now, there is lots of news coming out of San Diego.

Joss Whedon (Buffy, Angel, Firefly/Serenity, Dollhouse, Dr. Horrible) is set to direct Marvel's upcoming "Avengers" movie. Hopefully Marvel won't make the same mistake that DC did by letting Joss Whedon slip by and not making the often talked about Wonder Woman movie.

Speaking of Joss Whedon, the new Buffy motion comic is available for download. There is a free preview here.
The Pirates of the Caribbean Teaser Trailer was premiered at Comic-Con and was quickly spread to the internet like most videos these days.

The Week of Spicy Chicken Sandwiches

My wife and I have tried the Spicy Chicken Sandwich from a couple of different Chick-fil-A's in Georgia. The first sandwich was the best, it was the spiciest and it was the one that I am talking about on the latest edition of The Random City Podcast. The others were not as spicy, but they were still good. They officially go on sale next Monday.

Our Chick-fil-A had a VIP section, which was very cool. Reserved seating, table clothes and they took our orders at the tables instead of the counter. It was a very nice experience. The other Chick-fil-A did not go all out like this one.

Flash Forward Canceled, Heroes Canceled, while V is Renewed

This week the fall tv schedules have been released and the big news, to me anyway, is to of my shows have fallen. Flash Forward and Heroes are no more. Heroes may have some form of a conclusion in a movie or mini-series, but Flash Forward's Season Finale will be the Series Finale, sadly.

V was the weakest of three shows this season and it's being picked-up again. That's weird. I like Elizabeth Mitchell, but the show isn't as good as it could or should be.
